beginners introduction to yoga

I'm a California native, born and raised here, in Northern California. I began practicing yoga as a therapeutic tool to aid and nurture myself during a life transition and discovered first hand that yoga provided the grounding and inner solitude needed for the journey towards healing, wholeness, and self-awareness.

My yoga studies began at The Mindful Body in San Francisco where I taught, practiced, mentored and worked after completing my 200-hour yoga teacher certification in 2001. I continued my studies through immersion courses and workshops at the Iyengar Institute, Applied Anatomy Institute, Yoga Garden and The Yoga Society of San Francisco. I have received additional certifications in Yoga Therapy, Yoga for Kids, Prenatal and Postnatal Instruction, and my primary teaching influences have been from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Tim Miller, Nischala Joy Devi, Judith Lasater and Rod Stryker. My favorite local inspirational teachers include Maritza, Peggy Orr, James Higgins and Sarah Powers.

Yoga is life long practice that continues to change and grow as we do. I believe whole-heartedly in its power to heal and transform lives, that I have committed myself to sharing its wondrous gift.

Greetings!

I am a Stockton native and a current college student through Arizona State University. Performing has always been a passion of mine since I was a young girl; I participated in school plays, orchestra, Ballet Folklorico, and talent shows. During my time at Franklin High School, I completed four fun years of cheer! I am also classically trained in modern, ballet, and jazz. My favorite styles to perform are Modern and Afro-Caribbean! I am currently in the process of completing my associates in dance from SJDC.

I began taking dance seriously during Fall of 2014 at San Joaquin Delta College. I had the fortunate opportunity to study, volunteer, and work under Ms. Valerie Gnassounou-Bynoe (Director of the Dance Department at San Joaquin Delta College). Under Ms. Gnassounou's direction, I partook in the 2016 Youth Speaks collaborative dance workshop for schools such as Chavez High and Fremont Elementary. Our kids presented their own poetry and movement, showcasing their unique talents as a team to our Stockton Community. During this time, I learned how awesome kids are at taking on new challenges and showing their individual talents!

From June 17-July 18, 2016, I was excited to have my first opportunity to travel. As part of a study abroad program from San Joaquin Delta College, I travelled to the city of Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture in Japan with the direction of Ms. Gnassounou and Myio Uchida (Japanese Department at Davis). This program consisted of learning the culture and geography of Japan, as well as being able to teach English and American culture to students of kindergarten/high school levels. One of the most exciting aspects of this program was our learning the history and culture that plays into Japanese traditional dance!

I am so excited to witness all the talent and learning during these class sessions!
